Approach

As a research associate and lecturer at universities in Stuttgart, Berlin, and Lima, I have engaged intensively with questions of the city, urban perception, and spatial transformation. Over the last decades, I have lived and worked in both Berlin and Shanghai — two cities whose radically different historical trajectories, cultural conditions, and urban dynamics offer a particularly revealing perspective on contemporary urbanism. This long-term experience has profoundly shaped my understanding of the city as a constantly evolving field of perception, symbolism, representation, and social practice.

Photography forms an integral part of my research and spatial practice. Rather than serving as mere documentation, it functions as a tool for perception and critical observation, capturing the shifting relationships among space, image, memory, and everyday urban life. Through this process, the city reveals itself as a dynamic field of representation, social interaction, and continuous transformation.

In my architectural work, I explore ways of integrating strong conceptual ideas with the programmatic and functional essence of a building. Rather than imposing a fixed formal language independent of context, I approach each project through the specific conditions of site, climate, program, and urban environment. The unique character of a place becomes the starting point for the architectural idea itself.

Experience

Before founding MDRO, I worked internationally as Senior Associate Architect at Arquitectonica, Project Director at gmp Architekten, Associate Architect at AEDAS, and as Project Director and Chief Engineer at Studio 6, Tongji University in Shanghai. Alongside professional practice, I have taught and conducted research at the Technical University of Berlin, the University of Stuttgart, and the Universidad Nacional de Ingeniería in Lima.
